Start saving smarter

This beginner-friendly course teaches you what coupons are, where to find them, how to redeem digital offers, and how to plan your first shopping trip.

Included: four written lessons, four complete Hayes narration scripts (videos not yet generated), a ten-question final quiz, and an interactive shopping worksheet.

Course price planned: $20. Enrollment and payment are not enabled.

Lesson 1: Understanding Coupons

A coupon is an offer that reduces the price of a qualifying purchase when its terms are met. A manufacturer coupon comes from the product maker; a store coupon comes from a retailer. Both can be paper or digital depending on the program.

Read the fine print

Check the brand, product type, size, quantity, expiration date, and redemption limits. “One per purchase” and “one per transaction” are different restrictions; always follow the complete terms.

Practice

A fictional $2 coupon for a 40 oz CleanCo detergent does not qualify for the 20 oz size. If the qualifying 40 oz item costs $7, the expected pre-tax price is $5.

Welcome to Basket Blueprint! A coupon is a discount on a qualifying purchase. For example, a four-dollar cereal with a valid one-dollar coupon costs three dollars before tax. Coupons can come from the manufacturer or the store, and may be digital or paper. Always check the product, size, quantity, expiration date and limits. Your assignment: find one coupon and write down all five details. You don't need to purchase anything yet. Next, we'll learn where to find offers.

Lesson 2: Finding Coupons

Start at the retailer’s official website or app. Sign in, select your store if requested, and look for Deals, Offers, Coupons, Savings, or Weekly Ad. Weekly ads show temporary promotional prices; compare unit prices, not just discount amounts.

Eight stores to explore

Walmart: check current deals and Walmart Cash where eligible; this is not the same as a conventional digital coupon-clipping system. Target: Target Circle deals and eligible offers. CVS: ExtraCare offers. Walgreens: myWalgreens coupons. Publix: Club Publix digital coupons. Harris Teeter: VIC/e-VIC savings. Kroger: Shopper's Card digital coupons. Food Lion: MVP offers and Shop & Earn.

Store features change. Verify current terms in each official app before shopping. Manufacturer websites and authorized mailers may also contain coupons. Avoid copied or unauthorized coupons.

Welcome back! The easiest place to find coupons is often the store you already shop at. Sign in to its official website or app and look for the offers or weekly ad section. Target Circle, CVS ExtraCare, Kroger, and other programs work differently, so read the directions on each offer. Walmart Cash is a separate type of promotion, not a standard clipped coupon. For practice, choose two stores and find one offer in each. Record the product, brand, size, price and expiration date. Next, we'll learn how to activate and redeem digital offers.

Lesson 3: Digital Coupons & Store Apps

Create an account using the official store website or app. Verify your contact information and connect the applicable loyalty program when required. Never share your password.

Activate, match, redeem

Find the offer, read its conditions, and tap Clip, Save, Add, or the equivalent if required. Confirm it appears in your account. Buy the exact eligible brand, type, size and quantity. At checkout, identify your loyalty account using the store's specified method (phone number, card or app barcode). Some offers apply automatically and do not need clipping.

Check the receipt

Verify the discount actually appeared. If it did not, check activation, item eligibility, expiration, account identification and restrictions; ask customer service when appropriate. Do not count an unapplied coupon as savings.

Today we're using digital coupons. Sign in to your store account, find an eligible offer, and activate it when the store requires that step. Match the product exactly: a coupon for a 24-ounce shampoo may not work on a 12-ounce bottle or conditioner. At checkout, use the loyalty identification method the store requires. Check your receipt before counting the savings. Your assignment is to find one digital offer and write down how you would redeem it. In the final lesson, we'll plan a shopping trip.

Lesson 4: Your First Shopping Trip

Start with a budget and a list of items you actually need. Record product, brand and package size. Compare your store's weekly ad, activate eligible offers, and estimate your checkout total before shopping.

Illustrative five-item trip (not live prices)

ItemRegularSaleCouponExpected
Cereal$4.50$3.50$1.00$2.50
Pasta$2.50$2.00$0.50$1.50
Milk$4.00$4.00$0$4.00
Detergent$13.00$11.00$2.00$9.00
Toothpaste$4.00$3.00$1.00$2.00

Regular total $28.00; sale total $23.50; eligible coupons $4.50; expected pre-tax total $19.00. Expected savings $9.00 (32.1%). Only count actual savings after confirming the receipt.

You've reached the final Beginner lesson! Start with a spending limit and a list of items you need. Include each brand and package size. Check weekly ads, find eligible coupons, and estimate your total. In our example, five products normally cost twenty-eight dollars. Sales bring them to twenty-three fifty, and valid coupons reduce the expected total to nineteen dollars before tax. At checkout, identify your loyalty account, then check the receipt. Your assignment is to plan a five-item trip and compare expected savings with actual savings. Congratulations on completing the Beginner lessons!

Enter products and expected prices before shopping. After checkout, record the actual pre-tax price paid for each item. Blank actual prices are excluded from actual savings calculations.
